VJP Training Day at Pine Hill
Recently we hosted the Great Lakes Chapter of the VDD-GNA for a training day at Pine Hill on the Big Prairie Farm. Although the training days are mostly to help prepare dogs and their handlers for the upcoming tests they often become a FUN social event allowing like minded dog people to connect. Participation in these events may make most people question our sanity yet draws a level of curiosity that is like watching a traffic crash. We experience a lot of unexpected issues before our dogs are ready for the test and can often be frustrating or embarrassing for handlers to watch! The more exposure to new venues, people and conditions help the dog and handler begin to function as a team. Which is why we continue to subject ourselves to these odd social gatherings brought together by these bearded beasts we are so passionate about. The VJP test is a natural ability test and is the first in a series of tests these dogs need to complete. The VJP evaluates a number of attributes but focuses on the dogs ability to search, use its nose, point game and track. Tracking
The requirements of a versatile hunting dog include but are not limited to searching, pointing, retrieving, and tracking game. On this day our priority is the rabbit. If a dog can track a rabbit it can track about anything. The varied angles, turns and bounds rabbits use to elude predators are critical for their survival and make it a perfect test of the overall tracking ability of the dog. Tracking is a necessary ability for the Drahthaar since recovery of wounded game is very important in the ethics of a hunter. Gene Hill one said the the greatest conservation tool is a well trained dog. Regardless of the game pursued its our responsibility to make every effort to recover the game and the Drahthaar is well bred for this task. Yet it does require effort on our part to help shape their talents by training and practicing with our dogs. There are many opportunities on Pine Hill farms to shape those talents into a well trained hunting companion that you and many of your friends will enjoy.
